Birrrrr-d!

"Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. Put away perversity from your mouth; keep corrupt talk from your lips. Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you."       -Proverbs 4:23-25

"Then Jesus said to his disciples: 'Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?"                -Matthew 12:22-26

The title is in reference to Bambi when thumper is learning the word "bird." I just thought it appropriate in light of the Matthew passage. Isn't it good to know God values us? I mean, I know he does. And when you read it, it seems silly to say "how much more valuable are you than birds?!" But we get so wigged out by life. So we worry. For me the worry is all about my 299 paper due monday, followed by my bio test tuesday, and oh my gosh, Thanksgiving is so close. Wait a minute, it's November?! When did that happen?! My thoughts get scattered, my anxiety run up for no good reason.

Set your gaze directly in front of you. I cannot add a single hour to my life by worrying. And not just silly worrying-- this includes legit worry. Legit like a school paper (shout out to Jesus for MB, Bryan, and Chris-- all currently cramming their theses) or spending money on an airplane ticket for no better reason than to invest in a relationship. Petty worry is easy to put aside. It's the big stuff, the stuff on your mind as you go to sleep at night that God wants you to hand over. However far off or uncertain the worry in your case may be, directly in front of us tonight is God who cares every day for the small, often overlooked details of life-- like the birds.

I'm finding that when you give up the worry, the rest of your heart follows along. Like it says in Proverbs, when you're having to trust so fervently in Christ for the task at hand, perversity and corrupt talk becomes much less palatable (i'll translate that into modern day-- sexual references, cussing, sarcasm, gossip, character attacks in general). And soon God's not only looking out for the specific worry, He's all up in your conversations and relationships and opening your eyes to the small things-- like the birds.

His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

(p.s.- i cheated, i did not take the sparrow picture...)
